Dell fails to activat ScanJet 5100C

Have you seen this before? any suggestions?

I have a ScanJet 5100C that works on a couple of computers except a particular Dell Dimension.

What happens is the install goes fine. The hpppt tests the port as being fine but when I go to test the scanner or run a scan, the light never comes on and the application freezes.

My thought was that the parallel port is bad and not sending a signal on oneof the wires but the Dell technical support had me check out the port with a debug script and it seems ok.

I immediately took the scanner and cable over to the computer I took it off of and it worked fine, so moving it did not cause any damage.
We have also had printing problems with this computer in that, if you try to use an application while printing, the application and print would hang. Could only print again after a reboot. (hp deskjet printer)
