My Dell Latitude D620 laptop started exhibiting this problem a while back.
After logging into XP, but before the desktop icons appear on the screen, there is a prolonged waiting period of up to 10 minutes, where all I see is the “Applying Computer Settings…” message. Its as if the login process is taking an extraordinarily long time to complete.
I’ve made the following observation:
If I turn off WiFi (switch on the side of the laptop) the login process completes, the “Applying Computer Settings…” goes away, and the desktop appears.
I also use a docking station. Whenever I use the station, I am forced to wait the entire 10 minute period, since I haven’t found a way to force the desktop to appear quicker.
Any ideas on what may be the issue?
