Is there a source for step-by-step instructions to do a deltree in order to preserve files and replace only the operating system with a clean install?

>c:
>cd-- if you need:> edit config.sys
-- if you need:> edit autoexec.bat
>deltree /y progra~1
>deltree /y windows

or

c:
cd windows
deltree /y system.dat
deltree /y user.dat
deltree /y system.da0
deltree /y user.da0

second solution is for deleting registry files.
usually, that is destroyed

with second solution you will save time 'cause you don't need to update drivers
(.inf will stay in windows\inf and driver files in windows & windows\system)

also, windows updates will be there but windows will report that there is no updates installed but you will have updated windows files.
if you click "overwrite" during install, you will have to reinstall updates

Copy text below to DELWIN.BAT file. It should do just what you want. Watch for wrapping lines...

REM DELWIN.BAT

REM COPIES REGISTRY FILES - JUST IN CASE

C:CD WINDOWS
ATTRIB -r -h -s SYSTEM.DAT
ATTRIB -r -h -s SYSTEM.DA0
ATTRIB -r -h -s USER.DAT
ATTRIB -r -h -s USER.DA0
CD..
MD REGBACK
CD WINDOWS
COPY S*.DA? C:\REGBACK
COPY U*.DA? C:\REGBACK

REM CHECKS FOR PREINSTALLED .CAB FILES AND BACKS THEM UP

C:
MD WIN9X
CD WINDOWS
IF EXIST ..\OPTIONS\CABS XCOPY ..\OPTIONS\CABS\*.* C:\WIN9X
ELSE GOTO ELTREE

REM DELETES THE CURRENT WINDOWS INSTALLATION

ELTREE
DELTREE C:\WINDOWS /Y
IF EXIST C:\WIN9X\SETUP.EXE GOTO :REINSTALL
ELSE :END

REM STARTS THE REINSTALLATION OF WINDOWS

:REINSTALL
C:CD WIN9X
SETUP.EXE

REM END PROCESS IF PREINSTALLED .CABS FILES NOT PRESENT
:END

If you replace the existing operating system with a fresh install of it you will lose all of the programme registry links and associations etc.
