Demoting a BDC to just a server

By Bra-k ·
Can an NT BDC be demoted to just a standalone server within the same domain, and if so, how do I do it? Also what are the problems I may incounter, data loss, ect.

Thanks,

Bra-k

Unfortunately, in NT4, there is no true demotion process (as exists in Win2K). To change either a PDC or BDC to a standalone or member server, you are required to reinstall the operating system.

If your data (as opposed to programs) exists on a separate partition from your operating system, you run a very minimal chance of losing any data. If everything exists on a single partition, your best bet is to backup everything important before you reinstall NT.

Since you will essentially be doing a fresh installation of the OS (vs a repair installation), you will need to also reinstall any applications you have loaded.

Hope this helps.
