6 months after buying a lap top from a personal add, Microsoft has informed me that the VLK licence has been block for use. I perchased another OEM cd with code, when I try to install it the blue screen tells me computer has been stopped, sometimes it says I may have a virus ( I don't,it has been scanned and updated) or it tells me there is no hard drive detected ???what??? I don't want to format HHD and would like to keep updated programs and files from the existing OS. Is there anything I can do myself?

RE: Is there anything I can do myself?

Maybe.

There are several issues here the First appears to be that you have a NB with a Serial ATA Drive which isn't natively supported by the XP installer . You need to push the F6 Key when the first blue screen appears and when prompted insert a Floppy with the SATA Driver copied to its Root. That means not in a Folder but directly tot he Floppy, then press Enter to load the SATA Driver so that the install can proceed.

If this is a Name Brand NB and the Product Key = the COA on the case then contact the Makers and get one of their Recovery Sets sent out to you and use that to reinstall the OS but it will format the HDD and destroy everything on the drive. Of you can make your own Slipstreamed Install Disc by following the directions here

http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-6150784.html?tag=rbxccnbtr1

Or download these directions from here

http://downloads.techrepublic.com.com/abstract.aspx?docid=172974

Or use nLite to do the same thing

http://www.nliteos.com/download.html

If you chose to Use nLite make sure to read the Directions here

http://www.nliteos.com/guides.html.

As for the Blue Screen this generally happens because of either Faulty Memory or Timing Issues between different Memory Modules. You should test your RAM with MemTest86 available here

http://www.memtest86.com/

Or on the Ultimate Boot CD available here

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html

If there are no errors reported and you continue to get Load errors and the Data Face of the Install Disc is Clean remove all but 1 of the RAM Modules load the computer and when this is finished you can then reinstall the remaining RAM.

Are you just reinstalling windows to update your license key?

by Slayer_ In reply to Depressed XP Pro Owner

Because if that is true, you can do this from within windows, when it comes up saying your invalid, it should let you enter a new key. I am sorry I cannot give full instructions because when mine suddenly became invalid, I just removed that get valid crap and it stopped complaining, Windows Updates, still came through as long as I didn't go to windows update website :).

Some online searches should be able to tell you.

MS actually gives you a VBScript to change your windows key :). The fact that you can bugger your windows key thru VBS scares me greatly as a huge OS hole lol.
