design interface for software

I have experience designing interfaces for web
sites, but am now tackling a project for
standalone software. What is different about
this type of design? What file format will I need
to have my artwork in to hand-off to the
programmer? I think they are using C++...

bmp may do the trick

I am not sure but I had used even .jpg but .bmp may also do the trick.

The interface of software applications is a bit different from what you are used to. The interface must say a lot about the functionality of the system and how certain tasks can be done. I suggest you find out about the coding standards of that company; it will help you a lot.

If this is a database application, I suggest you take a look at similar systems before you begin.

Remember, a program interface is not all about a pretty face.
