I am currently working on project that involves the design of an ad hoc network which is rapidly deployable and robust in its functioning. It contains about 50 to 100 nodes within range of 1 km to 25 km. This network must be able to beconnected to a wireless but stationary infrastructure (the backbone mentioned above).
This is the network that the mobile teams will use to communicate among them and also to the nearest router, in order to be connected to the backbone network. Themobility of the teams is such that the max distance between the team members at any time may be about 20-25 km, however, most of the time, the whole team will be located in a 2-7 km diameter region.
A third-level of network hierarchy should be proposed which is communicating in limited-scope LANs. This subnetwork is to be designed as a network of expensive devices that the teams may carry. All these devices remain within 500 m of each otrher and share data on relatively high bit rate. Some of these device must have dual interface in order to talk to other team members, and if possible, connect directly to the nearest backbone router.
