Desktop Explorer Flashes on and off then stops

I have a HP Pavilion PC. It is running XP Home edition with all the updates. Recently this box started flashing the Explorer (desktop and speed bar). I can access all functions while it is running. If I open an application it will continue to run even after the Eplorer has stop flashing and I have no visual desktop or speedbar.

The Explorer will flash on and off for approximately 3 minutes. Then it will stay off. I can start it up from the Task Manager or if I leave a DOS window open. IT is very annoying.

I have run Spybot and virus checkers to clear any malicious spyware. They found several issues and resolved them (supposedly). I also run a Max Registry cleaner.

Any suggestions?

  Make sure that the Scanners are fully updated

  And are running in [b]Safe Mode[/b] so that the scanners can clean the computer properly.
  
  It sounds like a Virus Infection so you will need to list what Virus Scanners you have used. They may not be good enough to clean the computer.
