Hi
You need to enable internet connection sharing from your desktop.
You can find relevant material in the Start-> Help & Support on your Win XP.

Alternatively you can download a software to make your desktop a proxy server.

What you need to do is run the Network Setup Wizard on the Desktop first telling it that is the direct connection to the et and to allow File & Printer Sharing as well as that other computers will connect through that computer.

After that you then run the Network Setup Wizard on the NB and tell it that it connects through a Residential Gateway or another computer on the network and again share File & Printers as I'm supposing that you'll want to print from the NB to the Desktops Printer.

Lets know if you need any more help.
