Desktop Management

By sbowen ·
I am unfortunatly being forced to
migrate from Netware and NDS to Win2K
and AD. One of the main tools I am
losing is ZenWorks, and I am struggling
to find a comparible solution that
doesn't cost a small fortune.

Does anyone have any suggestions on
products that I might want to look at?

Heartfelt condolences

A product you might consider looking at is Altiris eXpress 5. It's not going to give you the functionality and ease of use of ZENworks, but it might ease the pain. It was reviewed in the February 2001 edition of Novell Connection magazine, although it doesn't need either NetWare or NDS. You can check the article out at I don't have any hands-on experience with the product, however, so I can't vouch for it.
What was the Business Case for this migration, by the way? Is there one, because I simply don't believe it can be cost-justified?

Forgot to mention ....

I forgot to mention that it's my understanding that the next ("Firestarter") release of ZENworks for Desktops will also not be tied into NetWare and NDS. It will support a number of back-end server environments and any LDAP-3 compliant directory.

Contact NetworkD Corporation at htyp://

They are LANDesk Deployment VAR in the US. LANDesk should address all of your management needs.

I, too, like Intel's LanDesk. You might also look at Microsoft's SMS 2.0, as well.

I'm not too familiar with ZenWorks, but from what I do know, you will have solutions that you'll find comparable.

Good luck! --Zo
