The list of screen savers is populated from the screen saver files in your Windows and Windows\system folders.

If this is a 3rd party screen saver, first try going to Add/Remove programs and see if you can uninstall it.

Some so called "free" screen savers install "spy-ware" and other mal-ware.

Your problem might be from the mal-ware. Download and run both AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy.
Links to both programs are on the TR download page.

Otherwise, you need to delete the .scr and related files for that specific screen saver.

CAUTION: Make sure to not delete files that are used by other programs or are Windows system components.

Erase Screensaver

by ppcarpenter In reply to Desktop--Screensavers

I assume you're using XP. Open Windows/System 32. In "Folder Options" make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" is. You should see a folder called "dll cache". Open it and find the screensaver you want to delete. Delete it. Then go back to the System 32 folder and find the same screensaver. Delete it again. That should solve your problem. If you do a System File Check or Repair XP the screensaver will be replaced so you'll have to do this again to get rid of it. XP puts the screensvers in 2 places: System 32 and System 32/dll cache. You have to delete in both locations.

Installed or .scr?

by shadzovgra In reply to Desktop--Screensavers

Is your troublesome screensaver an installed job or just an .scr file you copied to system32? If it's an .scr file, use Windows search to find it and then delete the damned thing. If it's installed then uninstall it. Either of these methods will get rid of the screensaver and stop it showing up in the screensaver list. Note: If you're running a 64 bit OS, you'll have to delete the .scr from SysWow64 folder. If your using Windows 7 x64 you'll have to delete it from both the system32 and syswow64 folders. Best of luck.
