Desktop very slow while Using VPN

While using Nortel Networks VPN, my desktop works very slow. Even to scroll through files on my desktop, the pauses are extremely long. Opening folders and files is altogether another challenge. Speed to Internet Explorer remain fine and Outlook functions at decent speed. But nagivating through the desktop and files becomes painfully slow. Pls advise.
