When you add a new image to the desktop a copy is automatically stored as bitmap (.bmp) on the root of the c:\winnt folder. The named image must be deleted from this folder to be removed completely from the system.

Look in "My Pictures" it should be at C:\Documents and Settings\(User Name)\My Documents\My Pictures. Go upto view and click thunbnail. Delete the ones you don't like.

Log in as an administrator and Use the search facility to find all copies of the file. Make sure the search options are set to search everywhere. use the either the wildcard for the file extension or list the variations seperated by semicolons eg picture1.bmp;picture1.jpg etc.
Once you have the list assuming it isn't too long click on the view button until they display as thumbnails. click on the ones you don't want and delete them.
