    Detected Modem drivers installed wrong

    Locked

    by izz ·

Well, it happened to me twice so far. Once I was configuring a Motorola modem which was automatically detected by Win98SE, however the drivers were wrong, then again if I install the driver the modem will not work. Secondly with a US Robotics modem, but this time on another machine that was also autodetected but it was not working. I would like also to add if you go to modem in control panel and try the autodetect the modem is not detected. I Was wondering if their could be like a registry tweak or something I can do. I solved the first Motorola modem by installing another modem, but when it happened again with me, well I thought that maybe there is something I am missing, I cuold not keep changing modems like that.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Thats why its called plug and pray…
Its a good idea to get into the habit of not using Win9x’s drivers for anything. Let windows install what it wants to install and then correct it. Download the latest drivers from the manufacturer, then go into system under control panel. Ony the device manager page, double click on modems and you should see yours there. Click on it then click on properties. Click on the Driver tab then click on Update Driver. Put in your disk with the updated drivers and after they install, you should be good to go. Another thing you will need to check if these are ISA modems are the interrupt and I/O address. On new computers, resources are Very tight with everything they add to them and ISA devices don’t share IRQ’s. Highlight computer within the same device manager page and click on properties to check out your IRQ and IO address situation.
      Hope this helps.
      Pete

thanx Pete, but what happened actually states that if suppose no drivers where installed and I went to control panel to allow Windows to detect the modem, it didn’t, this means that something at the IRQ level is going on, even it is a PNP modem.

The best way is to go to control panel, system, device manager, select your modem (or the one windows have detected, and select UPDATE DRIVER, insert the disk and follow the driver instalation.
If the modem came with a setup.exe program, browse inside the cd or disk in order to find a file named like modem.INF (what’s important is the extension, not the name. Also select the one that matches your Operating System (if you find many but in different folders)

      Good Luck

Actually for the US robotics I searched their KB and I found out about this problem, there is a software that removes the bad driver installed from WIn98se and then allows you to install the manufacturer driver. Tahnx everybody for the try.
