Determining best connection type

By Cymric ·
Is there a good rule of thumb to determine what type of connection, T1, ISDN or DSL to use based on the number of users at a remote location?

Actually, I've never heard of any rule based on the number of users at a remote site. Your rule should really be based on the amount of network traffic. If your applications are "low-bandwidth," you might be able to get by ISDN to support 300 users. However, if your remote users are using a primary file server via TCP/IP, you may need T1 or better.

Rather than basing you need on the number of users, I'd try to get a fairly accurate picture of the true bandwidth that group of users needs and base the connection type on that information.

Hope this helps!

Based on number of users? No, not really.

It's usually based on functions. For instance, if you are replicating data across the network from remote locations, then you probably need the greatest bandwidth you can afford. If you are backing up data you also need a constant reliable connection. If you are just using a database that is housed in the main location, then you can probably get away with a fractional-T1 or T1 or DSL or ISDN.

It depends on the business and the need for constant up-to-date information via technology. It's costs vs. profits.
