Determining errors, Whats your way?

By rickpawlyk ·
Often I come accross problems that are either Network related or Application related. For instance Applications that are giving strange errors, or some functionality doesn't work,
Whats your way of Determining where the problem lies, IN THE NETWORKOR THE APPLICATION?

Determining errors, Whats your way?

by Some Guy in Seattle In reply to Determining errors, Whats ...

I usually ping the application server from the client machine to verify basic connectivity. If multiple machines report the same problems, I start looking at issues with the app server. If one client machine is complaining, I begin with the client(unless it's an app that requires user authentication, then it could still be either).

Especially if there's been a hardware/software upgrade on the network, I look at the release notes of the application, hardware, or operating system to see if there are known incompatibilities.

Hope that helps,
