Determining Upgrades and Documenting sys

By ideafixer ·
My boss has recently asked me to develop a form that gathers information regarding our computers throughout the facility.

The reason is to look for upgrade needs or to switch computers where one may be better for a user.

I plan to ask basic questions like:
What platform, Ram and CPU speed?

Can you please give me some suggestions as to what information is good for determining upgrade needs and deciding if computers can be "switched" around due to needs? Are there some resources on the Web I can consult?

Thanks

Rob

Use performace montior on a windows nt server in your network to monitor the performance of each worksation and server on your network. Select the coutners base on your needs, cpu, page/sec, ram, etc... If the counters are high then you know that is where the bottleneck is.

If total CPU usage is on average +40% or Peaks 90 - 100 "frequently" upgrade.

Definately upgrade RAM if committed memory is more the installed memory. I would conisider a bare minimum a 25% buffer of installed ram vs committed memory. Keep in mind, by design, some applications, like Exchange 5.5, are desined to take all ram you have installed. So some application tweaking may have to be performed to get the memory managment you want.

Disk space is the hardest for a "standard answer" Tracking space each week over a minimum of a month is about the only way to determine normal growth.

There are a multitude of SNMP programs that will collect this data automatically.
