Device Driver/Software Problems

By LkgForSpace ·
I have a problem that is beyond my comprehension of Win98. Whenever I insert a program CD in the CD-ROM drive it starts to load and then an error message says:

"Setup is unable to decompress and copy all the files needed for installation. Contact your software vendor. Error 112"

Anyone know what this means? Is a device driver missing in the system files? I've tried so many things over the last few days. I actually managed to remove the message once by installing a Multi-function adapterdriver but, as soon as I reinstalled Windows again, I got the same error message back and when I went to install the MFA driver again it didn't fix it. So I'm really lost now. Help!

Document what you do. Does any program load or is it just the one? What OS are you using (95,98,ME)? Have you uninstalled the CD in normal and Safe Mode? and let it reload. If none of that fixes it it might be your DOS MSCDEX file. Try this:
Modify the Autoexec.bat file to reference the correct version of the Mscdex.exe file. To do so, follow these steps: MS Q139428

Make a backup copy of the Autoexec.bat file.
Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the Autoexec.bat file.
Modify the line containing Mscdex.exe to read

<drive><windows>\command\mscdex.exe <parameters>

where <drive> is the drive letter on which the Windows folder is located, <windows> is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed, and <parameters> are the parameters from the original line containing Mscdex.exe.

NOTE: To maintain compatibility with the installed CD-ROM driver, make sure to use all the parameters exactly as they are used in the original line.
Save and then close the Autoexec.bat file.
Restart your computer.

To NVPaladin:

Thank you for your answer. I will respond by answering the questions you asked me.

1. "Document what you do. Does any program load or is it just the one?"

Answer: The only programs that load are:
Win98 and the FIC CD ProIDE Patch

2. "What OS are you using."

Answer Windows 98

3. "Have you uninstalled the CD in normal and Safe Mode and let it reload?"

Answer: Yes Didn't work.

I even deleted all the references to the CD Driver including the INF files, reloaded the CD driver, checked all references to it, and then re-installed a fresh copy of Windows98 into a different directory and tried loading the CD (in fact, SEVERAL CDs) and IT STILL DIDN'T WORK!!

Maybe you have a better suggestion? Unfortunately I'm rejecting the suggestions you've given me.

Check out Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q230143 Error Message 112 "setup is unable to decompress and copy all the program files" It sounds like you have a space problem.
