DHCP

By msfiroudis ·
HI,
I'm running a winnt4.0 platform w/win95&98 clients. Is there a way through the dhcp server to stop certain clients from becoming a master browser. I know there is a way to do it from the clients workstation but I'm sure or atleast hoping I could do it from the dhcp server.Any help would be appreciated.Thank's in advance...

I could be wrong, but in this case I never heard anything stating otherwise. You'd have to kill the browser feature from the client side as you hinted at. In my experience and deaings with Microsoft DHCP, the election of the browser has nothing to do with the DHCP server at all.

But then if you have your servers forced as the masters, you shouldn't have the problem of the clients being masters to begin with at all.

Just a thought.

Hope it sheds some ideas on the situation.

Sorry, there is no way to do that through DHCP. MS has tinkered with the specification but not that much.

If you have an NT machine on your network it will be the master browser by specification. By default, the order that machines decide what is going to be the master browser is PDC, BDC, NT member server, NT workstation, win9x machines. If a machinewith higher precedence enters a network it becomes the master browser. If the master browser leaves a network, the next highest precedence will take over, unless there are multiples of that OS in which the browser election takes place.

As long as you have the NT machine on the network, the 9x machines won't be the browser.

Hope that helps,
