DHCP and IP release on XP Pro

By kavan ·
I have a problem with 2 laptops with a built in wireless card running XP Pro. They wouldn?t grab a IP number from the DHCP server. Using a network cable everything works OK. Using the wireless card the machines always assign an automatic IP and will not release it using ipconfig release & renew command. Windows XP Pro software sees the router signal and reports it is connected but has no access to the network and has wrong IP number. Tried different laptop with wireless card and it works fine. What am I doing wrong?

Have you tried to allocate a fixed IP address to the wireless connection and then check if the laptop can see the DHCP server?

When you say a 'built in wireless card', do you mean the wireless capability built into the motherboard of the laptop, instead of using a PC card (aka PCMCIA card) in the PC card slot?

You may be able to disable the built in card and insert a wireless PC card to see if that works and if it does, talk to the vendor about replacing the laptop if it is still under warranty.

Tried a static IP with same results. Wirless is on the motherboard. Going to try a PCMCIA wireless card.

I've actually had the same trouble on a 2 major brand laptop with a built in card (same laptop model same network). I could see the ssid and it continuously said I could connect but I would never get an IP address. I ended up trying a PCMCIA card and had no problems with either laptop after installing them. I just disabled the built-ins. You could at least try another card to see if that solves it.

I think using a PCMCIA wireless card is the way to go, thanks!
