DHCP Error in Event Log

By olopez ·
an error is registered in even log when the system is started. The message reads

"DHCP Failed To Renew a lease for the card with network address ......... The following error occured: The semaphore time out period has expired"

Note I am still able to log onto the network and still have and ip address. No other protocols are loaded only tcp/ip. I have searched for this in Microsofts Knowledge base and have not been able to find any info.

Anyone have any ideas how to resolve this.

you could try uping the time-out value (default is 45 secs) *as always, beware editing the registry*

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rdr\Parameters
From the Edit menu, select Add Value.
Enter the following:

Value Name:ConnectMaxTimeout
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Data: <Number of seconds>

WINS 2000 Clients configured to use DHCP ca automatically configure themselves with an IP address and subnet mask in the event a DHCP server can't be contacted. It attempts to find a DHCP server to get the TCP/IP infoormation neccessary to function,If it fails it assigns itself with a class B IP address and subnet mask.A procedure involves a client that has been previously contacted and received TCP/IP info from a DHCP server,in this case the client is contacting the DHCP server in order to renew a lease.
(default is every five minutes). So basically the DHCP server was not available and the client after a fesh installation attempt tried to renew a lease to the DHCP server

In Network | Protocols | TCP/IP Protocol | Properties you may have selected "Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server." Your server may have a static IP address assigned to it so you will receive this error.
