DHCP - issues same IP or not at all

By daniel.quick ·
I have a DHCP server running NT 4.0 Server SP6a - I have checked the scopes several times and the same ip addresses are on the same cards every singel day. Their leases are supposed to release every 24 hours, but seem not to. What's the problem? Thanks,

Daniel

DHCP - issues same IP or not at all

There is a "fudge factor" built in. Microsoft, and the other vendors with DHCP solutions all realized that there are certain applications that are IP dependent, and in order to save "re-negotiation", if a machine has an IP assigned via DHCP, and logs back in before the lease expires, will be assigned the same IP address ( based on it's MAC address ). The lease expiration is 24 hours after the last connection with no subsequent connection.

As long as you have sufficient scope to cover all your workstations, devices, why worry?
If there is no contention, that is more devices then there are available IP addresses, you have what is known as semi-permanent leases.

You can set the lease time to be a much shorter period, 1 hr, 2 hr, whatever, but again, if you have sufficient scope, why?

This feature is extremely valuable when it comes to IP printing via Print Servers. If the lease time was too short, you would have to re-set every time the printer went into sleep mode.
