DHCP problems

By tmyers ·
We have a dhcp server that keeps getting bad_address entries, and sometimes ip conflicts. There is no other dhcp server on the network. Sometimes a machine is given an address but it doesn't list it in Address Leases, and then the dhcp server assigns it to another machine. Then there is a conflict and a bad_address.

DHCP problems

Before you jump to the conclusion that it is a DHCP server problem; find out who has the IP address in conflict. Someone could have hardcoded a few addresses into some of the machines. We had a similar situation a few years ago when we ran out of IP addresses available via DHCP. The problem was that most of these people were technical and they simply remembered the last address, then they hardcoded their machine when the DHCP server reported that it did not have anymore address available. Users can be their own worse enemies. ;-)

The machines in question all were using dhcp.

Not sure in 2000 but with NT Microsoft recommended you "Reconcile" the DHCP database. It was a button in DHCP manager in View>Active Leases. This compared the DHCP Database with what was in the Registry and cleaned up the database. Seems the database was known for not keeping accurate records. Maybe look for an option like that.

It looks like it was a combination of 2 things: a setting on the router and a printer that was given a static address that somehow reverted back to dhcp. Thanks
