DHCP Server

How do you move a DHCP server from one machine to the other without shut down or a minimum shut down. And what is the procedure?

I have been studying this recently since we will be doing the same.
1. Build the new box and install DCHP server service.
2. Stop the DHCP service on both the new box and the old box.
3.Copy the \system32\Dhcp directory from the old server to thenew server. In the same drive letter and path as the old DHCP server.
Note: If the DHCP directory on the new box has a different path (i.e. different drive letter), then copy dhcp.mdb but not the .log and .chk files.
4.Start the DHCP service on the new box.
5.Reconcile the DHCP database. From dhcp manager, open up the active lease dialog box. click on RECONCILE.

That should do it.
Hope that helps!

The last time I moved my dhcp server, I created a completely different scope of addresses and had 2 DHCP Servers dishing out different addresses. I had a single segment and that was the easiest way.

Another way of doing it, if you don't have other services running on the machine, would be to give the New DCHP Server old server's IP address and taking down the existing.

If you have much DHCP relaying for multiple segments, then you may want to consider adding dhcp servers for choice subnets in order to ease your transition.

Microsoft article Q130642 has a complete but lengthly procedure for moving a DHCP database.

The DHCP services are easy to create and duplicate. The only reason to MOVE the service would be that there are so many reservations that duplication would be prohibitive. How big is your scope and how many reservations do you use?
