DHCP Server

By Poker ·
Scenario:

The infastrucure is a mixed domain consisting of NT 4.0 controllers and 2000 member DHCP and DNS servers. A 2000 server is in a domain, the NIC is statically set, the second one is disabled. Why would the box still pull from a DHCP server. The leases point to the MAC on the NIC that is static. Ipconfig /all confirms the static entry on the box.

Make sure that the static address is excluded in the scope on the DHCP server.

How do you know that it is pulling a lease from the DHCP server? It is possible that the DHCP server would show a lease for that machine even if the machine is not actually using that IP lease. If the machine at ANY time in the recent past was configured to use DHCP, the server could still show the lease as existing even though it's not in use. Try just deleting the entry on the DHCP server and see if it reappears. Hope this helps!

Another possibility is that the lease you're seeing on the DHCP server is a reservation, not a lease. Someone may have entered a reservation for this IP address just to make sure it didn't get assigned to another machine and cause a conflict. A better practice would be to exclude the range of server addresses from the scope on the DHCP server rather than using a reservation, but a reservation will also work. HTH!

Response to answer #2. In the leases tab under the scope properties window of the DHCP server, the "host" address matches the NIC on the 2000 server. Even though it is statically assigned. The Static IP is not part of the scope.
