DHCP server process at 99%

By razorren ·
I have a NT4.0 server with SP6a installed as a PDC and acts as a DHCP and WINS server. The process activity on the system is 100% (with a file named tcpsrv.exe consuming 98%). When I stop the DHCP server the cpu process returnes to normal. I havent made any system changes recently, what might be the problem ?

Thank you.

Did you try rebooting the machine?
If you did, try re-apllying SP.
A system file could be corrupted and unaccesble, forcing the system to keep on trying.
Did you check the event viewer?

Good luck!

Yes, I have seen this before. My problem was a corrupt data file for the DHCP service. I would recommend you check your event viewer log for a JET DATABASE error. If you have that error, you will likely need to restore the DHCP database from a backup, or just delete it and start over.

I believe there is a TechNet article on this, too. Go to www.microsoft.com/technet and see if you can find something there.

Good luck!
