DHCP server won’t start error 20013 – He

    Locked

    by matthew_morgan ·

After a big crash – recovery exercise I’ve got everything fixed except My DHCP server won’t start.
It just says failed to start error 20013

The back up tape I used to restore my failed system was a few weeks out of date.
I’ve tried stopping most other services – to re start dhcp – to no effect.
I’ve removed the service and reinstalled it – still no good – Help please…..

Hi, a possible cause of this problem the dhcp configuration database and its backup directories have been moved from their default locations (perhaps linked to the out of date tapes). When the dhcp database is installed, the default location is %systemroot%\system32\dhcp and the backup directory is %systemroot%\system32\dhcp\backup\set. Microsoft links this problem to NT3.5, not nt4 (or not yet). look at Q129730. I know you tried uninstalling the service, but I would try that again, run at least SP5, install the service, run at least SP5 again and check its default locations. I hope this helps.

I’d go with answer 1, except if your running FPROT Commander AV on your server, if you are you need to add the DHCP & WINS directories into the exclusion list. In some cases I’ve had to remove Fprot totally before DHCP works.

Answer one is very much on the track. Do not rely on backup tapes to restore such services like DHCP. I would suggest reinstalling it. Make sure you uninstall it first and reboot the machine then apply SP? and reinstall the DHCP services then rebootand apply SP? again. Use your eventviewer log, in most cases and follow through to diagnose the exact error and you will find the cause and how to correct it.

      Good luck!
