Dial-in problems using RAS and WINNT

By leonard.cayman ·
Does anybody know why you can ping an address in your subnet with a WIN98 machine but when you dial from a WINNT machine you cannot ping anything in the same subnet. I use RAS to dial-in and both machines are configured correctly to run in the same subnet. The equipment is the same on both machines. The only difference is that one is running WINNT and the other is running WIN98.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Unless your running DHCP on your NT box you will need to specify an IP and subnet address under dial up networking. it's under server tcpip settings.

If you are using remote clients then it is good to put the LMHost files on the client machines to speed up the network so you would not have to broadcast to find out where everyone is.

If one of the boxes are Windows NT server, set WINS server. This will store information about your network.

Check out this tutorial.

I am assumming you are dialing into a NT RAS server ( or is it the other way arround ) . There is a setting in the properties of the RAS service where you can specify if you would like to allow dialin clients to access this computer or the entire Network . Please Check it . On the other hand if you are Dialing out from a NT RAS server into a Dialup Server setup on a Win98 , then this problem shouldn't occur . You probably have an IP confilct on the network .
