Dial-up connection Unavailable

I have a HP Pavillion 720a running Windows XP Home Eddition SP1. The Conexant SoftK56 Modem is attached to Com3 and queries with success. But in Network Connections shows Unavailable – device missing.

I have tried relocating the modem to a different PCI slot, and tried a new Netcomm IN5920 PCI V.92 modem, but the situation is still the same.

I have tried removing all connection settings, and then removing the modem, COM1, COM2, LPT1, and both USB ports in Device Manager, then shutting down and letting XP find and reload the ports on startup, but still no joy.

When I have a look at the properties of my dial-up connection, under the General Tab is shows Connect using Modem – Unavailable device (COM1), with no option to change the selected device.

I have searched Microsoft Knowledge Base articles that suggested deleting some Telephony settings in the system registry, did this but still no success.

I’m open for any suggestions before I do a system restore.

ok sounds like your ran the modem diagnostics in the device manager. That would mean that the modem and drivers are properly installed [you would have seen a yellow question mark by modems in device manager if the modem wasn’t functioning properly or drivers weren’t installed].

Did you create a new connection in Network & Internet Connections[located in the control panel] and run the make a new connection using the Wizard?

ok if the modem is installed and in device manager there are not yellow question or exclamation marks, need you to expand modems in the device manager right click on the modem, choose properties,click the advanced tab, click on the advanced port settings. Down at the lower left corner specifies which COM Port Windows will use. Try changing that to Com Port 3. click ok to close out all windows. Then restart your computer. Tell us if this solves the problem.

Yes. It allowd me to create a new connection without any problems, but when finished there is a red cross through the icon and the connection is labeled “Unavailable – device missing”

If you have disabled the Network Connections under services, it wont allow you to see your connections or create a dialup connection.
I did this by mistake when setting up sbc dsl w/ the dial up option and the software couldnt find the modem anymore. once starting this service (and setting to automatic) you should be able to see modem connections as well as create new ones.
