Dial up dialog in Outlook Express

By keith.trayner ·
Using Windows 98 and Oulook Express (IE 6.0)the dial up dialog will appear before ANY connection. I have set it to send/receive every 30 mins and to Dial whenever an internet connection is not present, also on opening the program.

Whatever changes I make to the settings I cannot stop the dialog box from appearing

To disable this tendancy in Internet Explorer, open it and go to the "Tools" menu and select "Internet Options", then "Connections". Here, just check the box that's labeled: "Always Dial using default Connection".

With Outlook Express, it's quite similar, depending on which version you are running. Open OE, then go to the "Tools" menu and select "Accounts", then "mail" then, from the list of mail accounts, whichever one is used for your account, usually labeled, then click "Properties", then "Connection",then check the box Never Connect using this Account

As I said I have tried all the Options in OE and nothing works, which is the reason I raised the question!

The dial up dialog sometimes appears before OE on start up, and appears whenever I press send/receive and also as soon as the requested interval has passed (where I have requested connecting every 15/30/60...... mins)

A Simple answer as it often is. The "Connect automatically" box has to be checked when you are in IE and NOT when in Outlook Express.

It's possible that a third party programme has found its way into your PC and is trying to access the Internet. Go to Start/Programmes/Accessories/System Tools/System Information. In Microsoft System information, go to Tools/System Configuration Utility/Startup Tab.

This gives you a comprehensive list of all the Programmes which run when you start your PC. Untick any that shouldn't be there. If you're not sure what should and shouldn't be there, this Web Site will tell you -

OE still opens with the Dial up dialog box open, which opens up each time a connection is to be made, and prevents any automatic connection. I have removed all programs from the start up folder - but no difference.
