I just stated with Linux and have been doing a bunch of reading. Before doing much reading, I bought a "win" modem $9.99 modem thinking so what if it doesn't work. It didn't work. In short what you need is a controller based modem. Expect to pay about $60.00 for your modem. The down side is the cost the upside is it will work with Linux and has no effect on your processor throughput because what the win modem does with software drivers, that have to be written for your operating system, a controller based modem does with hardware.
So what about software drivers written for Linux? Yes, these are known as "Lin" modems. I From what I can tell they are like unicorns. I've heard about them but have never actually seen one in nature. I read the problem is the propriatery nature of the documentation and manufactures haven't recognised the additional income possibilities of writing for linux.

Hope this helps. After getting a controller based modem, the install is pretty much like any other modem. You just need to fill in the blanks on your browser and mail software config.

check this web site:

http://www.linmodems.org/

there is a utility to scan your modem. With luck you could find a linux driver generated by someone that can help you make it work.
