I recently bought a new modem from newegg to try to up my connection speed a little bit over my creative modem. At first, it did work better, connected faster. However some websites (ebay, hotmail, progressive.com, etc) would return connection refused in mozilla and page cannot be displayed in IE. The machine was in need of a wipe anyway, so I reloaded windows XP. Now the modem connects, and takes 10 minutes to load up a single webpage. Also direct x 9 is not being recoginized as being installed. (Some of my brother’s games require DX and says a current enough version is not installed, and it only requires DX 6!) I thought maybe the new modem was being evil, so I swapped it out with the old creative. When I would boot up with the creative in, it would get into an endless cycle of rebooting. If I was quick enough I could punch my password in, but even if I could log on, it would still reboot. Took out modem, problem reboot resolved. It is a relativly new Soyo Dragon Lite board, with Celeron 2ghz, 512mb, 60gb Maxtor, 52x32x52 artec burner, zip 100, soundblaster live, geforce MX440(ick, PCI). The computer was trouble free till this point. Also, I have also been getting a ‘low on virtual memory error’ and it is set to its recommended 768mb. That error has never occured before. IF a fresh install of XP Pro does not correct the problem… where do I go from here?
