As I understand it, if you are using wireless devices on both the W98 pc and the laptop, they will be NICs, and so you can set up a peer to peer network to do the data transfer – Dialup networking wouldn’t be used.

install the wireless nics in both machines, as you would with any standard network card, then install network protocols on both – i’d use TCP/IP, though IPX/SPX would work just as well, although you may have to check the manufacturers specs to see what protocols they support. I’veworked with some (admittedly cheap and cheerful) wireless cards that just do TCP/IP.

share the folders that you need to get the data from on each machine and you are away!

      I hope this helps

      good luck!

      john.

I think the question is correct except for the wireless part. The wireless technology will only allow for limited wireless area ,only a few hundred feet at best with out a signal regenerator or similiar. If you want to transfer file from a remote (as in across town) you need to Dial up via modem. Which to configure you need to make sure Dial Up Networking is installed on the remote machine and dial up server is installed on the win98 machine. You can goto my computer and then the dial up networking folder to configure each. All you need is to activate the win98 machine to act as the server through the menu. And to accept calls from only allowed users. If windows server isnt installed you need to goto control panel and add/remove software/windows setup/communications to install. You will see how easy once you load these two. then you can set win98 as server then call in on laptop to access allyour remote files.Good Luck
