Dial up to private network (Not)

By trevorwhite ·
Hi Folks,

Just upgraded my win98 Dell Inspiron 5000 to W2k and all seams to be well after resolving normal driver issues. Hot docking into my WinNT4 setup also works well.

Problem remaining is that I can't create new dialup networking entries. The Dial-up to private network option in the Network Connection Wizard is greyed out as is the Connect directly to another computer and Connect to private network through internet options. Its the same wether I'm docked or not (No network card when I'm not docked).

The existing Win98 connectiods were converted and work (these allow me to connect with the WinNT4 server when on the road). However I can't view their properties in the Network and Dialup Connections window or anywhere else for that matter.

I think I've read somewhere that there is some compatibility issues but I can't rememeber the details. It was something like having to create the connectiods as script or batch files.

Can anyone help with the reason for the greying out and/or source of incompatibility (if any).

Cheers
Trevor

Dial up to private network (Not)

Trevor,

Does W2K see your modem? If so can you dial out on it (telnet,ISP,ect)? I assume you have you Dell on a lan? If not check to see if the SERVER and WORKSTAIONS services have started. Check you error logs as well. I did a upgrade from Win98 as well and my modem was not installed. I tryied to have the Hardware Wiz set it up but when it asked me for the driver no modem was listed. I went to device manager and see that a PCI device had a question mark on it. I went to properties and updated the driver and used the W2K modem driver. Just though I mention that if your modem was not deceted in W2K.

Dial up to private network (Not)

Thanks, but yes the modem is installed OK. Thats what I use when I'm out and about on client sites. I do have a second PC gold card modem that has not been configured I'll pull it out and see what happens. I have full internet access over the WinModem when out and about and over my LAN which provides me with an ISDN service on the NT server.
