dialup in WinXP

By computab ·
Sony Vaio laptop with WinXP, has dialup, but recently it developed a problem, if the connection was terminated, it would not reconnect without shutdown and restart. It gives an error message, 'The modem is in use by another application.' So somehow, it has not disconnected, and can only reconnect if it is shutdown and restarted. Help please?

First, check sony for updated drivers.

Second, see this Microsoft article for a laptop upgraded from ME to XP:
Partial quote; "SYMPTOMS
When you try to upgrade your Sony VAIO PCG-FXA portable computer from Windows Millennium Edition to Windows XP Professional, Setup may stop responding with approximately 34 minutes remaining.
This behavior occurs because the version of Windows Millennium Edition that was included with the computer uses a driver that is incompatible with Windows XP Professional."

Third, Your modem may be on the way out or there is some other program holding the port open for Example Palm software, Spyware, Trojan or numerous other thorns.

This laptop is only 2 years old, was not upgraded from WinME. I will check out the other suggestions.

I've seen this before caused by viral dialer programs. If you havent
allready it might be an idea to virus check the machine and also
check it for spyware with somthing like adaware.
It could be this holding the port open.

This sounds like some kind of infection so you'll need to run both AV and Spy Ware Programs over the computer in Safe Mode.

As you haven't stated if you have any AV Program a free one is available here

As for Spy Ware Programs you can download the 2 following and make sure that after you install them you update them

Then boot into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key between the POST Test and Windows Splash Screen you will then get a menu of how you want to boot the computer chose Safe Mode without Networking and boot up that way then run the scans.

If you pickup any problems remove them and then rerun the scan just to make sure that the infections have actually been removed and that there is nothing else there that wasn't picked up with the first scan. Keep running the scans until they either come up clean or you can see what the infection is.

You should run the Virus scan first followed by one of the 2 Spy Ware Scans.

If you find an infection that you can not remove post back here and we'll give you an answer on how to remove the problem or a link.

To post back all you need do is an a Comment by pressing the button at the bottom of your question.
