Did you see the youtube on Susan Boyle?

By DadsPad ·
Saw this yesterday on CBS, everybody judged this 47 year old woman on her looks before she stated singing on the English "So you think you have Talent"

http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4949467n

Just the look on Simon's face is worth the view.

Just saw it!

by cupcake In reply to Did you see the youtube o ...

I am with you... everyone - including some of the people in my office who told me about it - had simply written her off because of her looks.

The only thing that I worry though, is talented as she may be, someone will dig their hooks into her, make her get plastic surgery, dye her hair, work on her teeth, skin and figure and she won't be the person she really is.

I hope she stays true to herself.

How does

by boxfiddler Moderator In reply to Just saw it!

dye her hair, work on her teeth, skin and figure change the person she really is.?

The good looking blogger isn't what she looks like, but the not so good looking singer is?

Y'all people need to make up your minds.

Ok, I will tackle that

by JamesRL In reply to How does

As someone who has been paid to sing and works with professional singers on a weekly basis....

A blogger is selling ideas. Doesn't matter what they look like, its the idea that counts.

A singer, on the other hand, is a performer. Honestly, you sell the song with more than your voice, it is also your stage presense, manner, your eyes even.

You don't have to be gorgeous, Pavarotti to my eyes isn't attractive, but you also don't want your manner or appearance to detract or distract from the vocals.

I wouldn't suggest she needs plastic surgery, but a hair stylist and some coaching on presentation would not be amiss, if she wants to be a professional singer and not just a gifted amateur.

Being vs. doing.

Appearance and being is the issue.
Not appearance and doing.

Nice try, though.

Being a professional singer..

...is her stated goal. Not just "doing".

You're telling me that 'personhood' hinges on how one looks in relation to one's career aspirations? And/or that 'personhood' hinges on what one 'wants to be'? And/or that being is encapsulated by one's stated goal?

No, didn't say that

by JamesRL In reply to Quoting cupcake:

I said that IF she aspires to play a different role she may have to look into some of those items which touch her outward appearance. Does that impact her personhood? Please, don't be silly.

Does changing her appearance impact her charecter - it may. Some people become famous, change their lifestyles etc, but never give up their core essence. Some let the external changes change their internal self, they lose touch with who they were and how they got where they are.

Not just looks

by Oz_Media In reply to Just saw it!

It was her common as muck accent and her gyrating hips when she made dumb comments before she sang. As always she picked a really big song that sounded well beyond her abilities, like so many others do that can't sing to begin with, it was just 'oh no, here we go again' and then she sang her heart out.

Well done, but the rest of the show was pretty entertaining too, I think I'll go on and try for that world record myself next year.

His face was a picture!

by gadgetgirl In reply to Did you see the youtube o ...

It's been all over the news since, which is how I found out about her since I don't watch it. She seems well grounded (and Scottish!) so I don't think she'll let herself be pushed around that much!

Another one to look out for is "Flawless", but I don't know if it's on YouTube.... fantastic dancers with fantastic moves.

Both these acts should surely go somewhere!

In the case of Susan

by santeewelding In reply to His face was a picture!

She doesn't need to go anywhere. She is already there.
