difference between suddomain and OU?

by BeerMonster In reply to difference between suddom ...

I'm guessing that your paper is using the phrase subdomain in place of the more commonly used phrase 'child domain'. In the Active Directory structure, the first domain in a forest is a root domain, and others that join the forest join as 'child' domains of the root domain. this relationship is reflected in the Domain Name System naming convention (known as the DNS Namespace). Say the first domain in your forest is mycompany.com, and you create a subdomain called sales in the forest. This new domain
would be a child domain (or subdomain) of mycompany.com, and would be identified via the DNS reference of sales.mycompany.com.
So, in short a subdomain is a domain which has a child relationship with another domain. An Organisational Unit (OU) is a type of container object within the Active Directory structure of a specific domain. It is used to group resources (such as user \ machine accounts) together, thereby allowing control of those objects to be delegated to a person or group. In this way the admins of that OU can be given a great level of control over the OU's contents, while not being given control over anything outside that OU. In NT 4 it was an all or nothing event, you either had a certain level of control over all the users \ computers in the domain or you had none at all. OU's also allow you to specify a Group Policy Object, a series of restrictions or mandatory settings which can be forcefully applied to any users or computers within the OU. Hope this helps...
