start the system with a emergency boot disk,{the one you made when you installed windows}, start the system with cd-rom support if you need to access win 98 cd, if you have a copy on the HDD, then you will need to know the correct path, lets assume you need the cd-rom and it is drive d:,

from the command prompt type:

extract /a/l \win98\setup\base4.cab vmm32.vxd c:\windows\system /y

this is assuming that the base4.cab file is located in \WIN98\SETUP and that you installed windows by it's default to C:\WINDOWS

you may have to check the command for accuracy, at the command prompt type extract/? and press enter, the forward slash /a switch will search all cab files begining with base4.cab. I know this is what you need to fix the prob...write me if you have probs,

micheal@techemail.com, good luck to ya
"ps. this will work for all your vxd errors, and they always go to either c:\windows or to c:\windows\system"

if you can't access anything from that hard drive and you just want to clean win98 off and install again, i would recommend putting your HD in another computer and just formatting it from there
u can do it in windows just right clik and go to full format on the HD. If you don't happen to have another computer laying around, then you can ask a computer savvy friend to help you
