DIR00001 entry on C Drive ??????????????

We have a NT network with Win95 and WIN98 clients. A handful of clients are having problems with their machines. The system is slowing down and a directory has appeared on the HD. The directory is named DIR00001 with subdirectories. DIR00001\55555555.555\66666666.666 These look like directories created by SCANDISK being run and encountering errors in the FAT. A directory listign cannot be accessed of these directories, scandisk will nto complete (out of memory), defrag will not run (because scandisk own’t finish), chkdsk /f from DOS will not finish (it keeps saying the directory is truncated). When I ran fdisk /mbr (thinking a scrambled FAT), it did not work. Tried running deltree but same thing. Thought about a virus but none have been detected. We use Norton AntiVirus 2000 (current definitions) with Autoprotect enabled. A virus scan would not finish due to the corrupted directory. The only thing that has been installed was the SMS client a week ago. This problem has started a day ortwo ago.

This really sounds like a hardware problem. When I run into anything like this at work, I junk the hard drive. A $150 harddrive is not worth much of the user and my time.

Have you tried swaping the HD in some of them? Are they using the samemodel PC w/ the same HD?

We had similar issues and had PC after PC keeling over, and we investigated power spikes, viruses, and many other things. Turns out the HDs that came with the PCs had a 40% failure rate in the two year warranty period. After replacing all of them, the problem went away.

When you ran DOS commands where you booted into DOS or just running the DOS window? Did you try running scandisk while booting into DOS. Can you change the directory/files attributes and then delete?
Since this is a problem on more than one system, and you are the second person to submit this problem today, it seems very much like a virus. Virus detection is reactive. If it is something new the scanners won’t find it. You may consider contacting Norton’s research center.

I agree with BG1…get in touch with your virus protecion provider. If you can’t capture it you may want to make an image of the drive minus certain data and fedx it to them.

does sound like a virus, but have you tried booting to a floppy first & then runnig utilities?

We are experancing the same exact problem. I downloaded a program called shreader, if you drag the folder into this program the DIR0001 will be removed but… a new directory called qxvzwjgh.dnb will be created. If you try to delete this, it will be replaced. You can rename the directory to something like bob but this only renames the problem but not solve it.

I have even re-image the computers with Ghost but some get the directory back, usally just after SMS updates the Norton file virusfiles.

First go to winfiles.com and download 3of9.ttf Then you can use word or excel to print your numbers. Remember to prefix and subfix your number with the *. This creates the start and stop in the barcode.

I contacted our upper-level and was told this is a problem caused by virus definitions dated 6/16/00 and 6/19/00. Virus definitions dated 6/21/00 do not cause the problem but does not fix the DIR00001 issue. More information in next comment.

To solve this problem, boot to DOS and enter the directory tree of DIR00001. Delete all files in the directory (del *.*) then delete the directories.

This problem is caused by Norton’s last signature file. Update to the newest release.
