direct cable connect by serial/parallel

By jonblaz ·
i'm trying to connect a pc to a laptop, the laptop is running win me and the pc is win 2000.
when i go to the network connection wizard "connect directly to another computer" is greyed out. I tried "allow incoming connections" but it only gave me an ltp1 port. can anyone help?
if there is a better way to complete this task i'll check that out too but would perfer the above question answered first.

a better way would be to connect the computers via a cat 5 crossover cable. This is dependant on if each computer has a network card.

First, what network protocals and services are installed on the PCs?

You need at least direct cable connection installed before you can enable the parallel or serial cable connections.

in addition you can actually just get a usb to usb networking cables...it cost probably around 5 to 8 bucks...you just need to plug the into the usb port of the pc and the laptop...install the driver from the the disk provided...and u have a networkconnection...this speed is much faster than a laplink cable...

I would agree with answer no.2, in regards to what is installed? Setup provides the option for installing direct connections during the initial installation of the OS and later if needed. Insert your CD with the OS on it and run setup, custom setup,or install additional components, whatever option they give you.
If you're connecting via two serial ports, make sure your cable is a "null modem", pins 2&3 reversed on one connector.
Hope this helps.
