Direct cable connection

By timcarry ·
I often have to connect to Windows 98 computers with unknown capabilities to exchange a few files. The easiest way in the past was with Windows Direct Cable Connection on the printer port. Now with XP proffesional it says I am connected but the computer or drive does not show up anywhere. Drives have been shared on both machines. I have now tried this with several Windows 98 machines, setting them up as both host and guest with no luck. My machine normally logs on to a domain even when not connected, but I have tried it as administrator on my local machine. This has happen hundreds of miles from even a phone so it has been very frustrating.

When connecting a XP computer to anyother OS you need to run the setup a home or small office network wizard. This will prompt you to create a floppy ICS that you can then run on the 98,ME,95 and win2k computters. Heres a link describing the procedure.

On your XP machine, you must set up accounts for all users.

You need to run the network wizard to set up a small network. It should be easy from there.

Have you tried different parallel cables? Could be a faulty cable. Also, check whether the Winxp machine's drives are ntfs formatted. If so, that is probably the problem, as Win 98 cannot see or recognize ntfs drives (natively).
