Direct Cable Connection

By peetree ·
I have a laptop running Windows 98, Build 1998; setup as a Guest, and my desktop running Windows 98SE, Build 2222; setup as Host. The desktop fully recognizes the DCC but the laptop keeps sayiing it cannot connect. The cable is a Direct Connect cable which came with PCAnywhere 32. Both ends are connected snug and properly. Is it because it is drawing info. from a higher source to a lower target??

Direct Cable Connection

Make sure that a compatible protocol is installed on both pc's. By default win95 used ipz/spx and win98se used tcpip (I'm not sure about the default of win9. If the win98 machine has ipx/spx then add that protocol to the win98se. If neither of thepc's have anything but tcpip then you will need to install either ipx/spx or netbeui.

Here's the ms kb:

maybe also try typing in the computer name of the host on the laptop instead of letting it 'find' the host...you will need ipx/spx, and i think the same workgroup name on both...
