Asking for assistance with the following Windows NT problem, but suspect same problem exists on Win 2K and XP.
Scandisk is finding errors and saving the files in the Found.000 and Found.001, Found.002, etc directories. Corrupted files are being saved and renamed to File001.chk, File002.chk, File003.chk, etc. under the found.000, Found.001, etc directories.
The problem is that I can not delete all the chk files. Some are giving me an error that the “Directory name is invalid”. This is confusing as these should be files and not directories as per normal scandisk functions. The funny thing is that these chk files have a folder icon ! and the properties of the chk file identify it as a directory. All this leads me to believethat the OS thinks that it is a directory where in fact it should be a file !? Hence the error “Directory name is invalid” actually would make sense.
I’ve attempted many approaches to resolve (refer to below) and also searched many a newsgroup and web sites for an answer with no luck. I have found a few other postings by others with a similar problem, but no answers. Yes, I’ve even checked Microsoft’s knowledgebase and TechNet.
– Tried to delete as local admin.
– Checked and set “Full Control” to permissions on the files.
– Tried deleting using NTFSPro
– Checked attributes and found they were set a system and read only but removed these attributes and still unable to delete.
– Renamed the chk files with no problem, but still unable to delete.
– Properties show CHK files as 0 bytes.

I need to identify the cause and resolution as I’ve run into this in trying to create standard images for use on our 400+ workstation network and I do not want every image to contain these rogue files / directories.
