Directory Services Error

By Rod Oatis ·
I Ghosted out a smaller W2KAS hard drive to a partition on another drive of similar size. Once I tried to boot to the new drive, I got an error stating that the isass.exe file could not be located and to boot in DS Safe Mode to repair. At the DS Safe Mode logon screen, I was not able to logon. Password incorrect...all of them. Can anyone advise how to get in to fix the file problem if my passwords are not recognized?

Directory Services Error

If you are booting in DS repair mode, you are not using the domain admin credentials, but you are logging on as the local administrator.
This is the initial password used when first setting up w2k, before running dcpromo.
So try to find out the local admin credentials, and try to use them.
If this does not work, it is not only your ad which is corrupted, but also your local sam.
I do not know if M$ recommends ghosting a DC, but i can imagine things go wrong.
(Same SID wrong computer)

Anyways, it might be the local admin password (lots of people who do not think about security issues leave them blank, you might try this one).
Good luck.
Ron.
