I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 Laptop and upgraded to MSWindows 2000 Professional, most everything seems to be working great, except when I try to start a game then I get the message ?Direct X initialization failed, please check your drivers & resolution setting. What have I done wrong, how can I fix the problem.

first go to microsoft & download latest directX 8.0a ,you have to uninstall previous version before you install new version. After install go C:\program files\directX & run through all the tests to see if they all pass.If game still doesn't work you probably need to update your sound & video card drivers. You'll have to go to thier web sites to get them. Also your display may need to be set at 800 x 600 for games to work.
