DIRECTX 8.1 WIN NT2K

By galehickey2 ·
Need Directx 8.1 for NT 2000 to run an application. Was advised NOT to use v9.0 as DirectX CANNOT be uninstalled and WIN2K does not have a restore feature. Where can I get 8.1 for 2000?

other thought:
if i had newer (3-4 years) hardware. i would not be afraid of directx 9. sooner or later you have to bite bullet maybe and run latest version. so just saying. in case this is opportunity to backup/image system install DX 9, be ready to revert if troubles...
guess in soapbox mood (again) but i say listen to folks but make own decisions. saying 'don't upgrade' or 'stay away from this or that version or service pack' is cheap shot way of trying to look knowlegeable if you ask me. ask the folks who are telling you this for more details. what exactly has been their experience? usually ends up being one or 2 pretty well defined issues, may or may not have anything to do with your setup...

Like Sarge said, don't be too afraid of Direct X 9. However, if you ever have to remove it, here is a site where you can download a directx removal program:

Remove any spaces from pasted link.

Just a side comment:

If the driver for the video card does NOT support DirectX 9, you can have problems.

I recommend against installing a newer version of DirectX unless you can also install a new video driver with support for the newer version of DirectX. I have just seen too many system lockups and memory leaks when the version of DirectX and the video driver are not in sink.

As Lizzy stated, there are utilities that can remove DirectX and allow you to then install an older version.

The gamer support sites have a number of links to different DirectX removal tools.
One is www.voodoofiles.com

Once you switch back to DirectX 8, make sure to download and install the security patch from Microsoft for DirectX 8.
