DirectX Security Patch Problems

by thechas . Updated 22 years, 11 months ago

Microsoft has posted a patch to correct a security flaw in DirectX dating back to version 5.1!

Check out the TechNet Article MS-03-030

Those of you who support Windows 98 and Me systems can expect to have some problems with this patch.

For Windows 98 and Me systems, the only way to patch the security flaw is to install DirectX 9.0B!

The problem you will face on many older PCs is that the driver for the video card may not support DirectX 9 at all.

If youhave older ATI, 3dfx, S3, or even pre-GeForce nVidia based video cards, the drivers at best only have support for DirectX 7 or 8.

So, you are faced with a choice, live with the security issue, or upgrade users video cards.

There have already been postings in the Technical Q&A section from users having problems after installing DirectX 9 on older hardware.

As always with Microsoft patches, proceed with caution.
