Disable addition of thumb drives

By jthibodeau ·
Is there a way to prevent standard users from using thumb drives in windows xp? I would like them to be prompted for an administrator's password when this happens.

Users and power users in Win2K and WinXP normally require administrator priveleges to setup thumb drives. If you setup your users as users or power users they shouldn't be able to setup the drives at all. If they are already setup, you'll have to remove the settings from the registry. If you are on a domain, you can prevent there use with a group policy.

The accounts are set up as standard users in active directory. Where in the Group policy would I find this setting? I have looded up and down for it.

You can create a policy, if you are running Server 2003 Active directory, that will deny access to the jumpdrive. You can cutomize it the way you want it.

As always, back your system up before changing anything in the registry.

In the registry, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
Change the 'Start' value from 3 (enabled) to 4 (disabled).
