Disable Printer Auto Install (WinXP)

By Soeki ·
hi, guess the Topic says a lot about my Question.

One of my clients has a small 12-hosts network and is running XP... they asked me to look out why the shared printers keep Auto Installing on every host in the network. I was shocked, I never stopped to wonder why XP does this, cuz I guess I did'nt care, I know this is provably something easy to do, I just started to search how to do it on the knowlegde base but thought about dropping it here. =)

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced+NoNetCrawling

change the value from 0 to 1

Nice of them to add this, but should be off by default... if you ask me, and they never do.

Now, what I do wonder is why don't they work?
I mean, I think they wouldn't mind to use the "Autodetect" feature if it had worked. you go to the printers folder and see 12 automatically installed printers... but none works and if you try to send documents to them you'll only get errors. It is a scary thing to open a Printer folder and watch 20+ printers (Auto + Manual installed)

LOL.

Work or not, its not a very good idea in most cases.

You put printers in locations based on work that a group may do. Say you have a finance group printing checks. Do you want everyone able to print to that? Or the big boss chooses one of the 12 printers, prints the confidential document to the wrong one. This is a problem waiting to happen.

Plan a printer setup and impliment. Its part of the net admin job. Auto install may work in a very small enviroment, but not much use (or a problem) in even a small network.

Auto Install printers in Win XP

I have a question. How do you force Win XP OS to create an Auto Install Printer? I found that it is the only way that the correct computer name is displayed on their Test pages.

Thanks
