This registry edit came from Please make sure that you back up your registry before doing this!!!
Disable the Ability to Right Click on the Desktop (All Windows)
This tweak removes the context menu that would normally appear when the user right clicks on the desktop or in the Explorer right results pane.
Open your registry and find or create the key below.
Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called "NoViewContextMenu" and set it according to the value data below.
Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
Value Name: NoViewContextMenu
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

Hi Chuck,
Thanks for the message you sent--I didn't see that you had added a comment to your question.

Yes, you can add the Policies and Explorer keys by right clicking on the item directly above it which is CurrentVersion for Policies then on Policies for Explorer.

Just saw Leopold's answer and his way will work also.

If you want to use this restriction only on certain machines, editing the registry will work. Editing the registry is risky (mistakes take effect immediately--there is no undo hence the need to make a back-up prior to editing if you're not comfortable in the registry). It's all a matter of what method you are comfortable with.

You have at least 2 options, You can edit/create a GPO (in a w2k domain) and do the changes that you need, or edit the local policy of the computer (if you dont have a w2k domain) or you can use the tweakui from microsoft.
which is safer to do then editing the registry.

just find the file desk.cpl which will be in windows\system directory ,and rename it to desk1.cpl so that right click will not work in desktop and works only when clicking in control panel.
